The Reality of Right Now

A closeup of a stack of newspapers

Please allow me a moment to real here for a second: we are all humans caught up in the same dumpster fire of a current reality. Living and working during the Fascist takeover of our almost 250-year-old Democracy isn’t just a political abstraction; it’s a daily slog that takes a very real—sometimes extraordinary—toll on our collective mental health, finances, and time.

We at Cassandra’s Children aren’t immune to the weight of it all, despite our best intentions. We deal with the same burnout, the same financial anxiety, and the same exhaustion that comes from trying to survive current events, while simultaneously building something meaningful in a landscape designed to favor the few, and punish the many.

Where We Stand

While we are doing the best we can, we need to acknowledge our human limitations: These past 15+ months have taken a mighty toll on all of us at Cassandra’s Children. Like everyone else dealing with the constant terrors we see in the news, we have been overwhelmed, and overstimulated, and unable to do anything more than simply try to survive these dystopian times.

Due to not fully taking into account how we, ourselves, would react to the constant spate of dreadful headlines, and unconstitutional actions of this Administration when we undertook creating this non-profit, we are moving far more slowly than we’d like, or even thought to imagine. We had visions of sprinting, but our current realities often demanded a crawl.

But we are not giving up. Not now. Not ever.

We Are Still Moving Forward

While our pace may be frustrating—to all of us!—our dedication to our mission is firm. As we navigate the same daily obstacles as everyone in the US, we are slowed, but not stopped. Bowed, but not broken. We choose to prioritize slow, but steady, growth over overwhelmed and ineffectual burnout—ensuring that as we move, we do so with our collective integrity, health, and emotional wellbeing intact.

Thank you for standing by us as we navigate this messy, all-too-human journey. Together we’re deep in the trenches, but we all continue to look up for that sliver of blue overhead.

In Solidarity,
